The School Counselor's role at Dixon Middle School:

·        Talk to students with social, emotional, and behavioral issues

o   I have an open-door policy.  If I am not in my room, the office will be sure to find me.  I also have a mailbox on my door for confidential notes.  I will address those as soon as possible.

·        Help develop organizational skills 

o   I have a small cache of school supplies that will start the organizational turnaround.  I can meet with a student during time not earmarked for core instruction.

·        Help establish career goals

o   Middle school is not too early!  Have you checked out  It is a great site to build your future.  Look for the billboards out in town.

·        Talk to parents who have concerns about their students 

o   You can call or e-mail me.  I try to return any and all calls and emails the day I receive them—the next day by the latest.

·        Act as a liaison for new students as well as students leaving our school

o   The JS2S program supports new students and their transition from their former school to DMS.

If you would like to take a virtual tour of our school, please go to “School Counselor” on the DMS main page.  You will need to click on the “Tour of School" tab.  It will take several minutes for the buffering to run its course.  Once this is finished, you can walk the halls of the school and visualize being here.  The recording occurred last year so some of the classrooms may be different this school year.  This mainly impacts our Exploratory classrooms.  

If you are new to the school and want to register your child, we have the registration packets for all three grades available on our main page.

504 Information:

As the 504 coordinator, I have been asked what is a 504, and how does it help my child.  The following is from the Transact website—a compliance and communication center that helps school systems meet federal requirements.

What is Section 504?

Section 504 is part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which is a civil rights act that prohibits discrimination based upon disability. The law states that no person with a disability can be excluded from or denied benefits of any program receiving federal financial assistance either directly or indirectly; this includes all public schools. With passage of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Congress required that school districts make their programs and activities accessible as well as usable to all individuals with disabilities. The requirement means more than just physical access; a child may require special accommodations in order to benefit from their education.
